Tackling wellness through sleep for stressed out executives

Posted on: 27 July 2016

Sleep is an often neglected aspect of health management. However, when patients get enough sleep, they experience a range of wellness benefits including reduced tendency to gain weight, mood improvements, and a reduced risk of a number of physical disorders such as diabetes and heart disease. Here are some natural health care approaches to managing your sleep.

Schedule time for sleep

One of the simplest reasons that people can struggle with getting enough sleep is a simple time crunch of trying to fit too many hours of work into a day. Make sure to plan for a sleep time that allows you to get 7-9 hours sleep each night and switch off your computer or phone at this time so you aren't tempted to answer just one more email, or complete one more piece of work. There are several computer programs which you can use that lock out programs after a certain hour so you aren't tempted to keep working.

Make time for exercise

If you have an intense job, it can be hard to find time for exercise. However, if you can block out an exercise session each day, this can help you to become more physically tired (which would help you sleep better) and help your overall wellness. A physical trainer or targeted exercise class can help you to get the most out of a limited window for exercise.

Control your diet

There are many dietary factors that can have an adverse affect on sleep including overindulging in sugar and fat late at night and drinking caffeinated drinks. Overindulging in alcohol can also affect sleep quality as, although alcohol can make you feel sleepy initially, it often leads to a disrupted sleep.

Practise relaxation exercises

Relaxation is a skill that often improves with practise. Meditation can help you to reduce stress by stopping a cycle of thought about certain issues and can often help you to build a more creative solution longer term. You can get some help with meditation by taking yoga or relaxation classes. If you are a regular traveller, there are some great smart phone apps that can help you to relax and unwind for bed while you are on work trips.

Having adequate sleep is an important way of ensuring your overall wellness. Not only does getting enough sleep ensure that you will stay well but it will also mean that you can perform to your optimum level at work.
